Luxe Beauty Tip: How to make that Manicure last

By Melanie McCulley

This seasons nail colors are rich and dark. Here are some of my tips to make that manicure last...

1. Always dehydrate the nail before any polish application. Swipe your nails with an acetone-based cleanser like OPI's Bond Aid to remove residue like moisture, oil, and water. The residue will prevent your polish from adhering.

2. Apply a sticky base coat. Instead of over filing nail beds before polishing, avoid any surface damage by using a tacky base coat to help polish adhere better. I love CND's Stickey Base Coat.

3. Seal the “free edge.” A quick way to extend the life of your manicure is to apply the base coat, polish, and top coat to the part of the nail that has been clipped or filed. Doing so helps protect the nail from water damage which will lead to chipping and peeling.

4. Fix any nicks right away. If your polish isn’t completely dry yet and a nail gets nicked/dented, it could lead to chipping if it isn’t fixed immediately. Rub a little cuticle oil over a dent to smooth it out or simply wet your finger and smooth over the dent area.

5. Apply cuticle oil on your nails daily. Repeated use drives oils deeper into the natural nail. Applying oil twice a day can help prevent peeling and splitting. One of my old school faves is CND's SolarOil (pictured). Can't beat it the yummy almond oil scent!

7. After your manicure is complete, apply a coat of clear polish every other day. Be sure to swipe over the free edge, re-sealing any polish that may have started lifting. This is a great tip for extending your manicure for up to 10 days! I suggest trying Seche Vite fast drying top coat. It's guaranteed not to yellow!
